Wewei Chu integrates a range of media into her painting practice, exploring the notions of immediacy and chance in painting, and their relationship to bodily movement, personal consciousness, perception, and intuition.
She begins each painting with a material characterized by its transient quality, such as a mixture of pigment powder and glue. She then incises or marks the surface using tools or her hands. Some of these gestures evolve from preparatory sketches, while others emerge intuitively, resembling the spontaneous act of writing. Rich in unpredictability and improvisation, these initial layers—marked by cracks, imprints, and textured relief—form the foundation of her artistic research. Throughout the painting process, she seeks to recognize and name these traces, oscillating between abstraction and narrative.
Her paintings evoke a sense of lightness, creating a metaphor akin to a game of hide-and-seek—expressing a desire to remain partially elusive, resisting complete capture or interpretation.
Weiwei CHU (b. 1997, Taipei) currently lives and works in Paris.
