Inspired by both science and religion, Erica Hsu (b. 1998) works primarily in painting, using it as a means to investigate the relationships between the body, the soul, and space. Her works introduce a sense of movement onto the still surface of the canvas, constructing layered spatial dimensions that imagine the manifestation of spiritual entities. Often limited to monochromatic or closely related color palettes, her paintings emphasize restraint and sustained contemplation, directing the viewer's attention toward structure and form. Through organic imagery, quietly dynamic gestures, and symbols evocative of mysticism, Hsu creates monumental, almost epic compositions. Her paintings serve as reflections on the inner psychic landscape, reassembling fragments of the spiritual realm within reality. Poetic yet profound, they depict the emergence, existence, and dissolution of temporal dimensions, intertwining expansive narratives with deeply personal philosophical inquiry.
Erica received her BFA from the Department of Fine Arts at the Taipei National University of the Arts before continuing her studies at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, where she earned her Master's degree. Her work Become a Sword When Necessary was exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London in January 2024, exploring the visualization of spiritual consciousness through a poetic visual language. Later that year, in August, she presented four large-scale recent paintings at HdM Gallery in Beijing, further expanding her investigation into movement and spatial expression in painting, demonstrating the continued evolution of her artistic practice.
